Donate your unwanted coats this winter

Monday, November 02, 2026

Wakefield Council, in partnership with Biffa, has launched a winter coat donation appeal to help support people across the district during the colder months.

Residents are encouraged to embrace the spirit of giving this winter, by donating any unwanted coats and jackets.

"Many people will have coats hanging in their wardrobes that are no longer worn but could make a real difference to someone facing a difficult winter. By donating your unwanted coats, you're helping local people stay warm while also preventing useful clothing from going to waste."

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services

The Winter Coats Appeal forms part of Wakefield Council and Biffa's wider textiles recycling campaign, which encourages residents to consider alternative options when dealing with unwanted clothing, including repairing, rehoming or recycling items where possible. It is important that clothing and textiles are never placed in household waste bins.

Between 2023 and 2025, residents recycled an average of over 360 tonnes of textiles each year through Household Waste Recycling Centres and Bring Sites across the district. The items were then sent to specialist textile processors, where they were sorted for reuse or recycling.
