School place planning

About school place planning

Wakefield Council has a statutory responsibility and must make sure there are enough school places for children and young people across the district.

The School Organisation Team monitors current and future demand for school places and works with schools, academies and multi-academy trusts to ensure that the right number of places are available in the right locations.

We look at information such as birth rates, pupil numbers, new housing and population changes to understand how demand for school places may change in the future.

How we plan school places

School place planning helps us to:

  • check that there are enough school places across Wakefield

  • identify areas where more school places may be needed

  • identify areas where there are more places than are currently needed

  • help make decisions about changes to schools where needed

  • plan for new housing and changes in the local population

  • help children and young people attend a school close to where they live
